It took Kubrick a few films to hit his stride, but then all he did was make classics, one after another. Paths of Glory, Spartacus, Lolita, Dr. Strangelove, 2001, Clockwork Orange, Barry Lyndon, The Shining, Full Metal Jacket, Eyes Wide Shut. What a body of work! Just think about the range, quality, and depth of those films. Truly incredible.

Gotta love all these other directors being so clueless as to why Stanley would want to do 80 takes on a scene. He explained it really well on the set of Eyes Wide Shut. To paraphrase, he said it's absurd that people build all of the sets and all of these people show up and put on so much work, and then the actors expect to do four takes and call it a day. That's the actual craziness of Hollywood and Stanley Kubrick hated that sh*t

Kubrick "needed" Oscars as much as Beethoven "needed" Grammy Awards.

According to Christiane Kubrick, he had a drawer full of miscellaneous awards, certificates, and honorary degrees, all given to him in the hopes he'd show up and give a speech - which he never did.

After he became a living legend, the only award he publicly acknowledged and thanked an organization for was from the Directors Guild of America - which he filmed his acceptance speech for. It mattered because it was voted on by his peers - other directors including friends and associates.

Best wishes from Vermont 🍁

Favorite fan theory: Alice not only was part of the cult (...even NK'S father was an acclaimed Dr who was accused of pdf stuff and later died abroad under suspicious circumstances) but that she helped orchestrate everything -- from her husband's unraveling to eventually them giving their child to the creepy old people we keep seeing in the film.

Even if we disregard all the controversial stuff in EWS, I would not be surprised if it wouldn't win, or even be nominated, for any Oscars. The Academy snubbed Kubrick so many times. He never won Best Picture or Best Director. 2001 A Space Odyssey won one Oscar (Best Special Effects). Barry Lyndon won a couple of Oscars (Art Direction, Costume Design, Cinematography etc.) but that's it. Zero nominations for The Shining or Paths of Glory. One nomination for Full Metal Jacket.

Kubrick never won an Oscar. Neither did Alfred Hitchcok, neither did David Lynch. An absolute disgrace.

Before this came out it was being pitched as a X-rated porno with Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman. It was not.
