  When he said he was putting in pear trees I cringed and hoped they were not Bradford pears. Those are horrible trees. They stink when they bloom and it takes forever to get rid of them , the root system is a horror .

  The bit about needing a union on that gas fitting makes very little sense to me. Valves are the most common leak point, followed by unions. Flare fittings leak less than those two. Really strange.

  As a German, I generally observe the way you North Americans build houses—it’s cheap and shoddy! I constantly see issues with mold and dampness—and I wonder where it all comes from. Don't you ventilate the space behind your roof cladding? Where is the constant exchange of moist air for dry air within the roof structure? Just take a look at German roofs—and no, they aren't more expensive when you factor in the repairs you end up facing later! German roofs don't suffer from moisture problems or condensation. On top of that, they are sturdier and last for at least four generations.
