  In the 1960s my father owned a station wagon and we would travel Route 66 and other Routes, but it was a different time back then. &nbsp;The country had much more individually owned businesses, and Route 66 was a nice picture of America at that time. &nbsp;Service stations for gasoline, oil, and other minor mechanical fixes could take place. &nbsp;The attendants were much more user-friendly as were people in pretty much any of the privately owned businesses. &nbsp;There were many small convenient stores, Diners, and Burger Stands, Motels, and small businesses like that. &nbsp;There were also Rest Areas that were pretty much consisting of a few outhouses and a few wooden benches, along with some areas of bushes and some areas had some &apos;walk areas&apos; and &apos;dog run&apos; areas. &nbsp;These rest areas oftentimes did not have any lighting or any other electrical things available: &nbsp;many rest areas did have more conveniences, but many were just as I explained. &nbsp;A rest area was a place for drivers to take naps from being on the road for a period of time. &nbsp;On Route 66 travelling the California-Arizona-New Mexico Route had many rest areas where there was no lighting and no real electrical conveniences, but the outhouses and wooden benches. &nbsp;At that time, rest areas were very practical for truckers and people that have been travelling for periods of time. &nbsp;Going through the desert at night was quite fun for a station wagon with a father and 6 children. &nbsp;Looking at the nighttime sky was something really special. &nbsp;We even had a nice pair of binoculars that made watching the nighttime sky even more interesting! &nbsp;When we would pull into these rest areas, it was a time where our father would get a little bit of sleep in the front seat while the siblings would run around outside, use the outhouses and just spend time off the road. &nbsp;At nighttime was the best time. &nbsp;It was late May in 1968 when we were travelling from Pasadena, Ca to Old Saybrook, Ct on this journey. &nbsp;The rest areas at nighttime was especially fun - and when there we no lights in the rest area, that made it more fun for us kids, especially us 4 brothers. &nbsp;The two eldest were sisters and the other four were all brothers: &nbsp;I was the 2nd youngest of the siblings. &nbsp;Going to a rest area in the desert at night without lights was fun. &nbsp;Once our eyes get adjusted to the night, it was quite easy to see. &nbsp;Now, there was one rest area where as soon as we entered the place I had an eerie feeling. &nbsp;This was the first and only time that I had that feeling. &nbsp;I didn&apos;t say anything and acted like nothing: &nbsp;I was 8 years old at the time. &nbsp;There may have been a few cars parked there beside a trailer which had all of its lights off. &nbsp;My siblings went outside and watched the nighttime sky via the binoculars and used the outhouses: &nbsp;my father was quickly asleep. &nbsp;Although I sensed something eerie, I didn&apos;t say anything to my siblings and acted like nothing. &nbsp;When they were all out of the car I casually checked out the rest area in a way where I tried to hide the fact that I was checking it out, but I made it as if I was just moving my head in just a normal manner. &nbsp; That camper&apos;s roof was probably 6-feet off the ground...my guess. &nbsp; Anyway, it was in the area of the camper/trailer that I sensed something eerie. &nbsp;I casually looked over there a few times, but did not notice anything. &nbsp;I also casually looked at other places of the rest area and didn&apos;t see anything. &nbsp;Finally, I saw it. &nbsp;I acted like I didn&apos;t see it, but I just had my head turned and acted like I was just looking at nothing. &nbsp;I was waiting for all of my siblings to come back to the vehicle. &nbsp;Once they did, I pointed toward the thing. &nbsp;They all saw it, and they became silent. &nbsp;I quickly called to my father and told him that there was something out there...and by the tone of my voice, my father quickly had the key in the ignition and turned it. &nbsp;On the second attempt, the car started and we were out of there! &nbsp;After driving for probably a half hour, more or less, my father found a lighted parking lot where there were many stores which were all closed at that time. &nbsp;During those days, it was not against the law to park in plaza parking lots and even sleep in your vehicles overnight whether any stores were open or not. &nbsp;Once we arrived at the parking lot, we all felt safe. &nbsp;There was even a trucker that pulled in the parking lot and that driver rested. &nbsp;There were other vehicles as well. &nbsp;My siblings were completely silent the whole time until we arrived at that parking lot. &nbsp;What I and my siblings saw at that rest area was what appeared to be a human-form dark figure which was taller than the top of the trailer/camper. &nbsp;I tried to see the face of the thing, but the whole &apos;figure&apos; was much darker than the night. &nbsp;I saw no facial features, only it was very dark. &nbsp;I don&apos;t know if this is called a &apos;Shadow Man&apos;, but it certainly appeared to be quite tall and very dark. &nbsp;When it moved it kind of swayed as it appeared to move toward our direction. &nbsp;What ever it was, if it was something - it doesn&apos;t mean it was intending to harm us, but it definitely gave us an eerie feeling! &nbsp;My siblings had talked about it and reasoned what we probably saw that night. &nbsp;This was years later when we were in our late teens and early 20s. &nbsp;We &apos;logically&apos; said that it was probably a cactus. &nbsp;We all knew that it wasn&apos;t a cactus, but that was the &apos;logical&apos; answer we had. &nbsp;My other &apos;logical&apos; answer was that it was a man. &nbsp;I am pretty sure it wasn&apos;t a man, but that was my other &apos;logical&apos; answer. &nbsp;This was May of 1968 on Route 66 in either Arizona or New Mexico - I wonder if anyone else experienced that kind of a thing or have heard about something similar.
