To be fair, I’m getting a bit tired of the whole “James Hype” style and those viral Instagram DJ mixes. For me, a good DJ set is about telling a story through music -- each transition should complement the previous track, creating flow and leaving that subtle afterglow in your head. Sure, throw in an unexpected acapella here and there, but what DJing has turned into lately feels more like a circus than an art form.

When I started digital djing, I lost the intimate knowledge of tracks I have.  When I had vinyl, there was a limit to what I owned  and I had to make the best of what I had.  Digital changed that for me, for the worse.

As long as you enjoy your own sets, nothings wrong with them.

I was under the impression that knob twisting, que spamming, looping 4 tracks together was the ultimate display of skill when it comes down to djing. This held true until my first gig where I did all that and after 40 mins of knob twisting, doing crazy busy transitions and fiddling with the decks I realised that no one is dancing to the music. Worst part is the dj after me came with his phone and played music off youtube and killed it.  To be honest looking back James Hype and Tita Lau’s brainrot style of djing killed tech house for me.

First of all, kudos to Digital DJ Tips! They have a fantastic selection of courses for different DJ styles. I purchased the two DJ Jazzy Jeff courses in 2025 and I still find them valuable. While professional DJ’s may have different approaches and techniques, they fundamentally teach the same thing which is: know and organize your music, practice, practice, practice and remember you’re playing for the audience first!

In James Hypes snippet he says no one watches the boring guy. His tricks and mixing style doesn’t work for all genres and crowds. If you’re playing for a more mature crowd (older not old) who still enjoy going out to dance and spend money at the bar they would not like or tolerate a DJ mixing like that because of the genres they typically prefer. You can’t please everyone especially these days but hey if it works for those who want to use it they should go for it and make a determination based on the feedback. Nice presentation Lavonda 👍👍

Sometimes, it’s about service to the song and to the crowd.  Not tricks or gimmicks.  Watch guys like Joey Beltram or Carl Cox or Djrum and they either don’t get too ridiculous with tricks or it’s more about evoking a feeling or response or using songs subtly as instruments in their own right to compose(Djrum).

If you want to learn for free, listen to Carl Cox, dj rectangle from the 90s, and anyone else who knows how to mix. Key word is LISTEN.
