George VI was a great king. It is a shame he died so young. He and Churchill made a great team during this time of crisis.

The symbolism of the lights in the scene between Churchill and George VI is a great little film making detail. You only see one light while they’re first talking, but when the king says “You have my support” you see two lights.

I know it’s a movie, but this scene makes me so proud of how my country stood, alone in 1940 ... after Europe had fallen, against the might of a terrible aggressor. I’m not foolish enough to think that Britain “won” the war alone - it took many allies from across the world - but my ancestors stood defiant and fought through. They were incredible!

Few people really understand the key move made by George VI here. Once it became known that he was backing Churchill to the hilt, the entire Establishment followed his lead and it literally changed the outcome of the war.

Churchill considered a deal with Hitler to be an abomination. And yet he was almost forced to that point. That's how bad things were for Britain, and how they were desperately hanging on by a thread - maybe even less than a thread.
