This biogas industry shows that what we call "waste" can actually power our future if managed smartly.

Germany turning millions of tons of farm waste into energy honestly feels like the most efficient “nothing goes to waste” philosophy on Earth. Somewhere giant machines are converting leftovers into power while the rest of us still forget leftovers in the refrigerator until science experiments begin growing inside containers.

German here. They were intended and subsidised with the idea of turning waste into energy with marginal loss in nutritional value of the organic fertiliser.
Problem was, that they hadn't considered that instead of cowfarmers building small plants to power their own operation, most of them decided it's a lot easier to feed just one giant fermentation vessel you dont need to milk either, instead of 200 cow-rumen.
With the subsidies on the energy they were able to pay more for rented ground than any other farmer, directly competing with food producing units like dairy farmers, cattle farmers, grain farmers. Were talking two three times the usual rate.
One big plant produces less electricity than one big wind turbine. There are plants that were built without a heat-use concept, so while some heat local hospitals or swimming pools some heat nothing at all.
Many plants along the northern coasts have their generators shut down remotely by the energy companies when there are strong winds. Wind energy takes precedent because it damages them to stand still in strong winds. So the biogas cant be burned in the engines during strong wind and instead gets burned in a big blowoff flame on site. All because we built wind farms without building the lines to bring it to our industrial hubs.
No one today could afford to build a on farm, decentralised, cow waste based 200kw plant.
This happens when you make policy based on beliefs and feelinga instead of data.

interesting video!!

sewage treatment plants that separate biosolids from wastewater for sterilization presumably can sell this feedstock so human waste can also find its way into a power plant to supply baseload power

The biggest surprise wasn't the technology.
It was realizing that some biogas plants need dedicated corn fields to stay profitable.
At what point does "renewable energy" start competing with food production?
