Our journey takes us through some of the most remote corners of Pithoragarh district, passing places like Lilam, Bugdiyar, Rilkot, Martoli and Ghanghar before heading deeper towards the Nanda Devi East Base Camp and the Panchu Glacier. But this journey is not just about reaching a base camp. Johar Valley carries centuries of Himalayan history and culture. The old villages, traditional houses, abandoned settlements and ancient routes tell stories of a time when these mountains were part of the historic Indo-Tibetan trade route. And as we move higher, the mountains begin to reveal themselves — Nanda Devi East, Nanda Kot, Hardeol and the enormous Himalayan ranges surrounding this remote valley.
