  I love the line Robert Crawley speaks in the first episode on Downton Abbey upon them receiving news of the Titanic’s sinking and his daughter Edith remarks, “I thought it was unsinkable.”  Robert replies, “Every mountain is unclimbable until someone climbs it. Every ship is unsinkable until it sinks.”

  I understand why they’d think it was <b>practically</b> unsinkable based on safety measures of the time but it’s just so weird to think of anyone considering a plane nowadays as “uncrashable” - as soon as you say it…

  My great grandfather went down with the ship and my great grandmother survived the sinking. She was pregnant at the time and my grandfather was born on August 25th 1912. I know nothing about my grandfather and my great grandmother would never talk about it other than that she survived the sinking.

  My uncle was a Boatswain on the Queen Mary. If you wanted to see someone lose their temper, you just had to tell him “You used to steer the boat”. Apparently ships carry boats, and you don’t steer a ship, you pilot it. He would also tell us how the Queen Mary had to come into New York harbour when there was a strike from the tug boats and pilots. It didn’t end well. She was drifting in beautifully to the pier. Unfortunately there was a gust of wind and, well, that gust just made the difference. 81000 tons at about 4mph basically shifted the pier a fair amount. Surprisingly little damage to the Queen Mary but she wrote off the Pier. My uncle used to say she was a lady on a mission.

  Simply put, the ships at that time were designed based on experience. The bow design assumed the ship would run into something. The sides would be struck by something, like another ship. The double bottoms were based on running aground. Being struck in the side resulting in the opening of 5 to 6 compartments was beyond any previous experience.

  Years ago my great grandfather tried to warn everyone that the Titanic would sink. And then they kicked him out of the theater.

  Whenever I think about the tragedies that happened aboard that ship. I think of the people who sold the tickets. The families that begged their loved ones to come visit. That clerk who assured that fashion designer that it was perfectly safe. That feeling of thinking you had some hand in someone&apos;s death. If the clerk hadn&apos;t sold her so well. If the families hadn&apos;t begged for a visit <b>then.</b> If the ticket sellers didn&apos;t... Of course we all know that there was no way they could know what was going to happen. We know they didn&apos;t cause any of it. It&apos;s just... that had to be rough.
