I live in West Tennessee USA with clay soil. I received a great tip from a former nurseryman . Instead of pulling out the summer annuals, just cut them even with the soil and leave the rest of the plant to decompose in place.

I had no idea that Jacob's Ladder (Polemonium) had a beautifully variegated form. My garden definitely needs one of those!

Very useful for clay.I think the first part when you described how to improve clay was very helpful. I have a bed which was a mound - that has really improved since the leaves and twigs rolled on it. We planted some things today, and I found the soil very improved compared to a few years ago.

Thank you for your suggestions. I am helping my son start his gardens in his brand newly built home in Saint Louis, MO. He has the typical Saint Louis clay which I have never experienced. We grow in rich brown/black soil. It will fun for us to learn together.

Thank you for these suggestions! Your timing is great because I finally realized the bed I thought of as sunny has the symphiotrichum. It does look lovely but when I see the plants I shared with a friend are brilliant as a result of the full sun all day. Mine get full sun til the fence shades it in early afternoon. So, I will split this again and place it in even sunnier positions. My thick, sticky clay has gradually improved with all the organic matter you suggest. You sure know how to help me red the conditions in my garden and continually improve soil. After 10 yers, the garden is finally taking shape. TY

Love your videos. I’m in Alberta Canada and have clay. We also use humic acid 2 times a year. Our clay binds up nutrients and humic acid helpes release nutrients so plants can take it up.

Hi Rosie. Last week, we planted 4 Mouse Ears Hostas (edge of bed), 1 summer flowering Astilbe, and 1 Hellebores (white with pink tinge)...to replace some(old) that had to be taken out waiting for the new windows install. Thks. 💌

P.S., At our last home, we left behind a David Austin climbing rose which loved that clay soil, with so many flowers the leaves could barely be seen !
