  I am 55 yo and was raised by my grandmother who was born in 1915. She told me stories of her elderly being formerly enslaved. She remembered in her 20s the government came through interviewing the former enslaved . She carried water to the cotton fields as a child. Her younger brother fought in WWII. He told her that the US Army put german prisoners of war in front of them on the train. She passed away in 1988 but left me with a world of wisdom from her 73 years of life.

  My Mama was born in 1929 and she and her 11 siblings had to miss school when it was time to pick the cotton. She said her fingers would bleed. She was white and lived in Northern Louisiana.

  A friend from Alabama told me that cotton fields were a dangerous place. He said that mice went into the fields looking to eat the cotton seeds. And cotton mouths were after the mice. Hence, the danger.

  My Dad's and his parents, brothers & sisters were from Mississippi. My grandpa, who was born in 1890s, picked cotton as a child. He was white. Not a slave, just that all the kids in their farm had to pick cotton.

  It should be remembered that most people in the antebelum South were white farmers, people who lived on small plots of land. &nbsp;The Plantation people, black and white, were the minority.
