I had begun playing in 1975 when I heard about Jaqueline dePre. Everyone had a lot of say about her, and I very much wanted to hear recordings, but none were available where I lived.<br>This concert was recorded about a month after Rostropovich was in London with the Soviet State Orchestra on the 21st of August, a long-scheduled performance as you might guess.<br>Tanks had, that day, begun rolling across the Czech border: the Prague Spring was over. The London audience roared with boos and shouts: "Russians, go home!" Rostropovich's wife, the iconic soprano who had faced down the KGB dogging her every step for years, hid in her VIP box in terror of the mood in the BBC hall.<br><br>At last, someone shouted, "SHUT UP!"<br><br>The orchestra began to play.<br>Rostropovich, "tears streaming down his face," played this concerto. <br><br>Dvorak was born just north of Prague. He died there.<br><br>People in attendance have said that it was the most important concert of the 20th Century.<br><br>DuPre is a fine cellist; I only wish I'd heard something else today, after hearing Rostropovich, weeping, play this piece a month before this.

So I’ve listened some of the top well known concert cellists perform this piece as of 2026 and none compare to the tone, expression, phrasing and lyricism that Jacqueline delivers. To be fair (because she plays with great animation) I listened to all play with my eyes closed. Its truly an amazing composition when she performed it. Dvorak would’ve been proud to experience that performance.

The Cello is to me a mighty instrument with so much emotional depth and expression. God bless the orchestra and Jacqueline for bringing a majesty to my world and firing 🔥 my instincts.
