Now imagine the wine barrel coopers doing this with hand tools. We still have people in my area that can do it. No part of the barrel is done with a machine except the timber that is bought at the start. It is great to watch.

Not only does it take a great deal of skill and precision as you say, but the overwhelming majority of them throughout the ages were made entirely by hand and without any of the power tools we take for granted today.

The traditional wood for the straps was Ash. It had to be split, not cut, with the grain, so the grain strands went thru unbroken.Then it was hand planed to thickness.
