My granddad, born and bred in Brooklyn, NY, enlisted in the British army in June 1915, a few weeks after the Lusitania went down. He was deployed to Gallipoli, the Middle East and France during the war. He married an English girl in Manchester in 1915, their first child was my father, born in Manchester in 1917.

These episodes on WW1, starting from the very first series, should be required viewing for all high school students. The entire modern world was shaped by these events, and these guys are the best storytellers we have available. Cheers guys!

Lusitania is hugely important to my home town, Cobh. Most of the dead were brought ashore and are buried here. It was a massive trauma for the town that resonated for years, leading to the building of a fine memorial in the centre. Cobh also has a big Titanic connection, being the final port of call, but until the resurgence of Titanic mania in the 1980s and especially with the 1997 film, Titanic was barely mentioned whereas Lusitania was always remembered.

My Grandad, Hugh Robert Johnston, aged 18, was a QM on the Lucy and was at the wheel when she was torpedoed.<br> He stayed on the bridge with the captain until the water reached them and the captain said, "Save yourself lad!" and they both stepped into the water.<br> Grandad was pretty unlucky. After that he joined the Canadian Army and was sent to Vimy Ridge. <br> In WW2 he served on the Lancaster, evacuating the British Expeditionary Force from St Nazaire.<br> Lancastria was hit by dive bombers and sank with the loss of over 6,000 -- still Britain's worst sea disaster. <br> He survived it all and retired to become a crossing guard for schoolkids.

The first uboot in the German navy were using kerosene engines that were generating huge clouds of white smoke and were therefore easier to detect. The diesel engines are almost smokeless and therefore hard to spot
