What about Utumno? Because Angband was merely its outer guardpost

We are told that the name Angband comes from Sindarin and means ‘iron hell’ but I wonder if Tolkien was maybe influenced by the Old Norse angr, meaning sorrow, grief, harm as found in the name Angrboda, the evil giantess on whom Loki sired the wolf Fenrir, the Midgard serpent and Hel. Her name means ‘bringer of harm’, Angband might mean something like ‘grief bound’. Beneath many of Tolkien’s names lurk shadowy real-world etymologies that add resonance to his work by invoking dim memories of ancient myths. Another example, of course, would be Beleriand with its nod to Belerion, the Ancient Greek name for Cornwall, an area famous for its legends of drowned lands.

some maps would be useful to show how the Middle Earth looked like before the War of Wrath and after it.

Utumno was his most powerful fortress. He built Angband as an outpost. Angband was Sauron's office when Morgoth ruled in Utumno until he was captured because of the waking of the elves.

if you can shape canyons & mountainranges, there is no need to "build fortresses"

Baradur was a Caribbean resort compared to Angband and Utumno.

Angband, like Utumno & Mordor, are like the bite marks where Melkor's venom, poison and virus enters Arda and spreads necrotically outwards to bring death and aging to all that it infects.
The Valar & 'their' Elves could not produce immunity to Melkor's infection and thus fled from and detached from Arda to stay pure.
But Men, forsaken by Valar & Elves, was forced to deal with Melkor's influence and evolve 'with it' to survive it and live with it.
Who had the worst version of Death - the Elves or Men❓

You're right of course. Angband went down even deeper than it rose up. And then there was Utumno. Morgoth was the ultimate dark lord, even after most of his power drained out with only Eru Illuvatar more powerful than he. But Beren and Luthian entered Angband and left again. Gwindor also escaped, as did Hurin, Maedhros and others. But once you went inside Minas Morgul in the 3rd age, you never came out again. That place still gets to me like nowhere else in middle earth.

I think Sauron tortured souls too. I think he wanted to break souls as much as Melkor did. Look at how he uses Celebrimbor's body as a banner, the specific method of destroying Numenor, what he did or at least tried to do to Fingon and Beren and company. And it makes sense. Melkor taught Mairon and Mairon served him and had a hand in all his work. Mairon learned from Melkor and Mairon worked with Melkor.
