■ Melting West Antarctica Scientists recently published research showing that 3 trillion tons of ice has melted in Antarctica since 1992. The rate of ice melt has accelerated significantly over the past five years, particularly since 2012. Most of this ice loss is concentrated in West Antarctica. The Pine Island Glacier, the area with the greatest melting, has lost approximately 30 meters of ice thickness over the past 25 years. Between 1995 and 2017, global sea levels rose an average of 7.6 mm, with 80% of this sea level rise attributed to ice melt in West Antarctica. ■ Exploring the "Canary of Antarctica," the Larsen Ice Shelf The Larsen Ice Shelf has recently undergone the most dramatic changes in Antarctica. The Larsen A ice sheet collapsed in 1995, and the Larsen B ice sheet began to break away in 2002. Last June, a massive ice sheet roughly ten times the size of Seoul broke away from the Larsen C Ice Shelf, causing a particularly shocking event. Just as the canary warns miners of the dangers of coal mines, the ice shelf is the "canary of Antarctica," warning of the dangers of global warming. The story of the icebreaker Araon, which departed Christchurch, New Zealand, on March 27, 2018, attempting to explore the Larsen Ice Shelf, but was forced to return in tears due to ice blockage, is presented. ■ Antarctic Sediments that Hold the Earth's Past The sediments beneath Antarctic ice preserve the Earth's past environment. These Antarctic sediments provide insight into the Earth's environment 8,000 to 4,000 years ago, the warmest period in recorded history, 125,000 years ago, when temperatures were 1 to 2 degrees Celsius warmer than today. Sediment samples provide crucial research data, revealing how rapidly global warming will progress and how the Earth's environment will change in the wake of global warming. Araon researchers use a massive 36-meter-long device to collect Antarctic sediments.
