First a stop motion intro and then a costumed story time skit? I must be at the cinema

I love the MocaBot and would 100% fund a a Kickstarter for this.

As an electrical engineering student interested in controls I did not expect to get a PID controller lesson in this video

The fish in the moka pot. Basically David Lynch (the famous surrealist film director) was having strange tasting coffee and discovered that soap had been left in the percolator. He later incorporated that into his show Twin Peaks, but instead of soap, he had it be a fish instead. "Fish in the percolator"

This is exactly the kind of smart device I like. You <i>can</i> use your phone/laptop, but you don't <i>have</i> to use it. It'll work without an internet connection. The smart-ness serves to make things possible, not constrain the customer.

I am a chemical engineer. We take a class, it’s a Senior level class, called process control. The root of it is learning how to program and optimize PID controllers. That was the best explanation I’ve heard, ever. Only change is it’s not 3 numbers, but is three equations. Laymen input numbers to essentially multiply each equation, they never have to see the root equations, they just adjust factors that tune the impact of the equations<br><br>Edit: One clarification- it’s one equation with three parts, but the equation is of moderate complexity. It uses mathematics found in differential equations, which is a step past calculus. Essentially they are based on accumulated error and the trajectory of the error as a function of time- which is Calculus. They are then transformed from a function of time to an artificial domain that allows for them to be solved with algebra, which is Diff EQ. This Laplace transform is what allows them to be easily tuned. Essentially the transform changes the reference point from time to something that makes the math easier instead of making the math work within a function of time

As a PID controller myself I didn’t expect to find my biographical note in a James Hoffman video about coffee on my lunch break.

Quick note also, for the quirks. Since this concept was sent to @James i worked on a bigger moka (4 cup) and a heater builtin the base (that bialetti has a heater glued to the bottom). That way heats faster and the pid is more responsive. Also, more water is more stable since It can absorb more energy (volume per surface ratio)<br><br>Since then the pid has been tuned Up for the bigger moka (his settings were for the new one, not the one that was used in the video, maybe that made It a bit less accurate)<br><br>I've been working on a more professional version with a thermocouple right at the exit of the coffee, and a scale... To me the scale was overcomplicating the whole thing but could work. The coffee bed temp for me is a plus.

As an electrical engineer and software developer (and coffee aficionado) , I can tell you this "prototype" appears better than many commercial products I've seen. Yes, it's a simple device but KISS products are almost always the most satisfying. I've seen plug-in MP's in Italy but not here in the US and I'm thinking starting with a plug-in unit may be a useful variation. Please let us know if he's developing the thing -- Kickstarter or otherwise.
