It is a good thing that her friends were right there when it happened. Not only were they there to comfort her—they knew exactly why what he did was horrible and protected her from what he would have done if she’d been alone. She probably would have been too stunned to defend herself properly when he laughed at her and tried to gaslight her into accepting his cruelty.
