Neutral balance point. The level in every house that is the same pressure as outside air. Hot air leaves through any cracks on upper levels and is replaced by air coming in through lower levels. If your stove is above this level(and it's different in every house and temperature) the stove will immediately put smoke through the chimney. If your stove is below this point you will have smoke unless you do a lot of work to fight it. Blow torch or space heater. Alternatively you can open lower level windows to lower the neutral balance point below your stove. I have a filtered air intake that brings fresh air into my return duct slightly over pressurizing my entire house. So my stove in the basement starts with a top down method with no preheating or smoke.

I found your "old way" to be humorous. I would never try something like that in my baby bear. I also do not use fire starters. A couple pieces of newspaper and some twigs works every time.

I also tend to keep a bed of coals so I do not even have to go through that most of the winter. Just scoop out ashes, drag the coals to the front, and add wood.

A modern stove, like you showed, probably works differently so my method might not work as well? My comment is mostly directed at the "old way" you showcased.

When I stopped using paper to start my fires, I stopped clogging up the screen at the top of the chimney. I haven't had to get the chimney cleaned again. I use fire starters that I get at Lowes.

The best method i have found is the top down mentod. You have all your size of wood all at once and lights up the 1st time every time.

a chimney that is not exposed to the outside and is not made out of metal will always draw ,some days a bit faster than other days of course .
have a three story seamless fire brick I lined cement chimney . IT always draws regardless of the outside temp .

The firestarter is what made the difference. When I was a kid our fireplace had a ball in a dish of something flammable. Light the ball. Good to go.
