  A huge problem is that many young people have never been taught the essentials of the faith. They have a mish mash of lifestyle choices, emotions, and political ideas that they believe are “Christianity.” They think that faith is a feeling (it isn’t) that Christianity is about doing or not doing certain things (not essentially) etc. Most churches preach a shallow emotional gospel so it’s very easy for young people to leave it.

  How can deconstruction be the “greatest challenge” to Christianity if, as you guys are claiming, those who are deconstructing weren’t really “saved” Christians to begin with?

  Love these discussions. I have left the "church", but not my faith in God. You make the statement that one view of deconstruction is the moving away from traditional Christiantity.  My experience is the opposite. I grew up Catholic and had a deep love for God at 6 years old. I spent my teens and into early 30"s away from God. But came back to Him at 33. I began my journey back in a Pentacostal church for years. Then an Evangelical for about 4 years. I could never align myself with their teaching. I've heard some use the small "gods" term, name it claim it, and prosperity gospel and many other twists of scripture I could not accept. So my deconstruction was to move away from new age thinking, and of course this doesnt include all Evangelicals or any of the major Christian denominations, but into Traditional Christianity. I have VERY few I listen to or take advice from. The Bible and the Holy Spirit are my guides. Sorry to say I can not believe what Christians today will swallow as truth. They will follow any new wave of doctrines because this or that man or woman said it ! But Christ taught that in these last day there would be many anti Chists and false teachers. I am blessed ( I guess :) ) with an overactive gift of discernment, so I tend to hear things un biblical that others take as creed. Thank you guys for your hard work in the Lord to try and guard against heresies in this modern day of all inclusive everything.

  All very convenient positions to hold if you want to just stick your fingers in your ears. When you're ready to actually think all of these concepts through, listening to these three will just get in your way.

  Ask the Christian why they hold to their beliefs to such a degree of certainty. What you’ll usually find is that it’s not an intellectual pursuit for truth. Rather it’s an emotional need for absolutes. Or a desire for moral objectivism.

  From personal experience I can say that what is so often missing is a deeper discipleship for the new Christian.

  I was a believer for over 40 years. I was “deconstructing Christianity” (aka, demanding better answers) in my own life starting years ago. It forced me to ask difficult, honest questions. Finding the answers wasn’t as difficult as mustering the courage to ask them, and accepting the implications of the answers.<br><br>Best thing I’ve ever done. I continue to ask honest questions in search of truth. Knowing my 40 years of commitment to the belief in Christ and the gospel, I hardly recognize the “old me” anymore. <br><br>For those questioning Christianity I say continue to demand real answers. Question the answers. Improve your “bullshit detector” and stop accepting the pat answers that Christianity gives to questions. Continue to learn. <br><br>If you are happy in your belief in Christianity, believe it. Knock yourself out. If not, leave it. It doesn’t hold up under scrutiny. You’ll soon learn that. Don’t take my word for it. Demand better, more consistent answers and you’ll find better, more consistent answers.

  The is a very big difference between asking yourself &quot;do I have good reasons and sufficient evidence to justify my god beliefs?&quot; and &quot;can I find answers that I can use to justify my god beliefs?&quot;.

  As always I gleaned so much from this forum. It was as enlightening as it was an equipping to understand the multiple reasons why droves of individuals are trending away from historic Christianity. &nbsp;Disheartening to face the truth that so many evangelical Christian churches are not faithfully preaching the word of God nor accurately explaining the message of the Gospel. Loved the collection of questions that all three of you use when speaking with someone who has fallen or willfully jumped into this slough of despond.
