  I am a former commercial fisherman.   It makes zero sense to needlessly revamp billions of dollars in fisheries infrastructure just to have a few more varieties of fish at the local supermarket that chances are people would have zero interest in consuming and couldn't afford to buy even if they did.  Things are done the way they are done for a reason and if someone really had a desire for exotic seafood they could simply contact a local wholesaler in Chile or Iceland or Scandinavia and have whatever they want sent to them.

  I went into a pretty standard grocery store in Milan, Italy. The seafood counters were easily 9 meters with 5 individual iced cases with more fish than the average American can imagine including several cephalopods. So SOME modern countries absolutely expand their use of seafood.

  I eat more than 5 different species of fish a year. I live on the Pacific coast.

  Weird, didn’t mention Pacific Salmon such as Chinook, Coho, Sockeye, Pink, or Chum. Nor did they mention Alaskan Halibut. We use Pacific Cod for crab or halibut bait here in Alaska. We also eat a lot of Dungeness crab and numerous species of rock fish.

  The closest store to me has over 10 options, and I can catch like 20-30 species by me that are good eating too

  Spanish Mackeral, Carp, Mullet, Pomfret, Murrel, Anchovies, Sardines,Snapper, Indian Mackeral, Barramundi.

  In my small supermarket around the corner there are more ocean fish and i even live in a country far from the ocean.....
