A great talent and a tragic story. Ramon Novarro was one of MGM's brightest stars in the 20's and 30's; sound didn't stop him. Caruso he wasn't, but he sings quite well. MGM's first "Ben-Hur" in 1925.

Novarro's salary was $100,000 for this film, and although the film did well on the international circuit it was panned by the critics. The New York Post said RN "deserves more humane treatment." On the plus side, Novarro sings "Dark Eyes," a major hit of the time co-written by bandleader Xavier Cugat (RN also had a hit recording of "Pagan Love Song" from his film The Pagan). He continually studied singing and had a light, operatic voice which wasn't quite strong enough to compete with other singers of the era. Also on the plus side is the wonderful Beryl Mercer, who has some of the best lines, and character actor George Chandler (the skinny moping student) who had a long film and television career working with numerous major stars - including one well-known tv dog. Thanks for the upload!

Two issues: one regarding pronunciation of Ramon Novarro. His first name is pronounced: Ray-mon, not Ra-mone. Also introduction mentions this is the first time Novarro viewers have a chance to hear is operatic voice. That isn't the case at all. In December 1929 Novarro starred in Devil-May-Care ... A muscial romance. In fact a film released approximately one year earlier, even though technically a silent with sound film...Novarro sings "Pagan Love Song" a number of times in it. Get your act together Pizza Flix.
