For anyone planning a trip: Consider staying in Odawara, which is right on the edge of the free-pass area and where most of the bus routes start, to find cheaper hotels and opening up more day-trip options to places like Atami or the Izu peninsula.

Ive done this journey 3 times 1978 2008 and 2012 and its something you will never forget. <3 I do recommend spending a night in Hakone Yumoto at a Onsen Hotel to complete the circle.

i've done the hakone loop in 2016 and 2024, and both times i found the various modes of transportation that make up the loop to be challenging to enjoy because of the crowds. still a lovely place, though.

For those coming from the West (or continuing westward after exploring Hakone), there is a direct bus to Hakone from Mishima Station that can save time and money. It also stops at the SkyWalk and Yamanaka Castle.
