“That’s not the Black Death, that’s just sparkling death” took me 2 seconds to register as a champagne joke and I laughed so loud

She reminds me of some of my favorite teachers / professors. Super knowledgeable and passionate to the point that she can point out the humor and humanity in topics that can sometimes feel apart from real life because they’ve been so mythologized.

From a historical standpoint, it's always weird to think how the Black Death actually had a silver lining. The massive labor shortage caused European societies to realize the need to do things differently. That and the dedication of scribes preserving classical texts were largely what brought about the Renaissance.

2 interesting points:

1. there was a doku recently that suggested (and demonstrated) that it was likely human body lice that exacerbated the spread of the plague (esp in the 17th c)

2. we DO know how some people were immune to it, it's a genetic anomaly known as CCR5-Delta 32, which in ancestors confers immunity to yersinia pestis, and in modern populations, immunity to HIV/AIDS. Use case, the village of Eyam in England. Known survivors of the plague traced descendants to modern day and found in skeletal DNA and living cheek swabs the same mutation.

Eleanor has a corky and enthusiastic personality that makes learning about medieval history much more exciting. The way that she expresses things just draws me in and makes me want to learn more and more. Her knowledge on these subjects are very interesting and intriguing. She is the kind of history teacher that I would of loved to have in high school. I will always click on any video she is featured in and the podcasts are very informative as well.
