This wasn't an AI data center. This was a regular data center that powers basic Google services. These have been in place for a long time since we've had internet services. People don't realize data centers are not new. What IS new is the rapid build out and the quickness. Probably should have went to a new one... not one that's been around since 2019.

I used to do the landscaping at the Google site by the old six flags in GA. We weren't allowed to point at the building or take pics. We had to go through three steps to be allowed on the property to work too.

Google saying it won’t affect local bills sounds good, but I’d still want that in writing before one of these gets built near me.

If they have their own substation they still pull from the grid. The only way to make data centers zero sum would be for it to have it's own power generation along with renewable cooling solutions. Everything else is diminishing the already existing infrastructure.
