China's philosophy appears to be if a technology or product is useful, make it affordable for everyone

This is what happens when a Government and its citizens does what its supposed to do, work for the good of the country and not themselves.

China has already an extensive affordable high speed rail system for long range travel. They have moved 800 millions people from extreme poverty to the world's average purchasing power parity. Building electric cars affordable for first time buyers in their domestic market is a huge business opportunity that could spread to the 4 billions of potential first time buyers in the rest of the world.

The small EVs are perfect for short distant travel, where public transportation is incomplete, for home shopping, such as between villages or districts.

A $1k EV is aimed at a huge potential consumer base. These are people that currently drive an old petrol-engine car, motorcycle or scooter. Or even someone with a bicycle who'd like to have a car... but can't afford one. You could finance a $1k vehicle over, say, a 3 year period for about $30/month (or $1 day).

instead of actually building anything like this in America, our useless politicians simply deny us the ability to own them.

There is a HUGE market for these in South/Southeast Asia alone. Then you have Africa and South America. I think China's EV strategy of affordability for the masses, is the right one. Compare that with the US building a walled garden so that a select few domestic companies can charge $50-100k plus per vehicle and make themselves trillionaires.
