Bogged to the chassis on a tidal salt pan, then two winches and three hours to get one 4WD back out. Shaun Whale and Graham Cahill push a new track to an unfished river on the Gulf of Carpentaria. It's 3,224km from Brisbane to Lorella Springs and unseasonable rain turns a three-day drive into a week — flooded highways, closures, and a warning about what the Gulf is going to be like when they get there. Lorella is a million acres of 4WD-only wilderness park out of Borroloola, and the mission is a creek the crew found on Google Earth that nobody has ever driven to. The park owner gives them permission to push a track to it. Shaun Whale takes the Dirty 30, Graham Cahill the D-MAX, Tim runs a 79 Series with a full-size touring canopy, and Reuben brings a chopped and extended Y62 Nissan Patrol on 37s with a boat behind it. Once the tyre tracks end it's sat maps and gut feel across tidal salt flats, tyres at 18 psi, with neap tides the only reason the ground is above water at all. The first crossing looks fine and goes bottomless — the D-MAX drops to the chassis in mud Graham Cahill describes as sitting in a cement block. Winching forward off extension straps, soft shackles and a full rope doesn't shift it, MaxTrax under the front tyres don't break the suction, and it takes two winches plus an anchor rig dragging it backwards through its own tracks to get it free. Then it's bush bashing between the fingers of salt flat, the camera car down hard, and a first camp on ground that may never have been camped on. Day two brings the creek crossing, another D-MAX bogging on a hidden watercourse that needs a double line pull off two trees to halve the winch load, a chainsaw track cut metre by metre through the scrub, and the Y62 and boat trailer both sunk within sight of the goal. Gear that copped it: winches on every rig, a recovery blanket, a Jetboil Genesis Base Camp for a venison meat log on the fire, and a 4.5 tonne GVM upgrade that makes 37s legal on the Patrol.
