Totally understand how you feel when you were completely speechless and emotional in the end.
As a Chinese, I know the lyrics and watched the show and understand the story about the character. I have listened to this song god knows how many times, even ten years later, it still brings me to tears.

Hey Zach! Slightly different username on YT but I'm the one who requested this on Patreon and I'm SO glad you enjoyed this!!! I'd never noticed how the melodic da's were paired with the snare drum in the back! Thank you for pointing that out! This song was my first exposure to Zhou Shen and it's still the song I go back to more than any others. The emotion in his voice and the way he closes the song, so soft and delicate, gets to me every time.

The show this is from, The Untamed, has a full instrumental OST and a full album of character songs. Both are very VERY well loved by fans!! If I can find any high quality recordings I'll probably send you more requests from this album in the future but most of the live recordings are...rough. Skilled artists! Not ideal performing conditions. But I'll keep an eye out for good recordings to send you!

Thank you so much for this video!!!

It is rare for a foreign blogger who does not understand Chinese to have such a profound understanding of the song.

This song and CQL, the drama it was made for, literally changed the trajectory of my life. Turned me into a loud and proud card-carrying fujoshi, and ZS is my favorite artist of all time 🥰

Undoubtedly, Zhou Shen is a very skillful singer, but you don't feel he's showing off. He's so much into the song's lyrics and melody. He's such a great performer on stage.

The song is actually sung from the point of view of one of the villains of the story. The character is gleeful and vengeful in his acts of cruelty and murder, which stemmed from his life and childhood where the world has never extended a hand and only ever cruelly crushed his (quite literally). However, fairly late in the story, he encounters a brief period of compassion from his enemy (a foil who is classically good, just and morally upright) under a very specific circumstance: his enemy had lost his sight and didn't know who he was, and thus treated him kindly as a human instead of as monstrous. Without going into the details of what happens or his choices that this song is also about, this experience triggers emotional turmoil between his belief that he can do whatever he wants to others, and yet also wanting for this other life that as a child he had simply wanted to experience kindness from someone. You are right there is so much to this song, including foreboding, lament/desolation, loss/grief, tragedy of life and of one's own choices... All this to say, this is a difficult character to portray. In my opinion, Zhou Shen's rendition perfectly hit the balance between making people feel deeply for this character while not glorifying his story.

As a Chinese speaker, his enunciation of the words while maintaining the smoothness of his line is unparalleled. I don't know how he makes his words so understandable to the listener without breaking up the words.

That was a great reaction! I think Zhou Shen places as much care and emphasis on the emotional delivery of his singing as he does on technique and skill. I think he'd be happy that he touched you. Thanks so much! More Zhou Shen reactions please! From Canada.

Through Zhou Shen’s heavenly voice, pain and persistence, desolation and hope, struggle and deliverance merge seamlessly, casting an endless lingering afterglow. It is a ballad that heals grief while acknowledging all human helplessness, a timeless piece that soothes every lonely heart wandering through the desolate city of life.

yes this why i really love Shen's music. he is such a technical singer yet everything in his tool kit is to serve, to express the song, not for showing off, that for a casual music listener like me i barely notice how difficult his songs are. Actually Memory is a song I do not have much feel, despite it supposedly being a great song; his performance is the first time Memory moved and brought me to tears, and pulled me into his orbit

Zhou Shen’s songs are deeply moving and can strike a chord deep within your heart. So there is no need for you to apologize for that — this is exactly what we call a first‑reaction. I’m really glad you enjoyed this song. Please keep reacting to Zhou Shen’s other songs.
