I think I'm the only person watching this video who clocked the Rihanna in the background

Why WB and DC agreed to hire a director to direct their movie but has no passion on comics is so puzzling to me.

these were my exact thoughts as soon as I saw his interpretation of rorshach, even alan moore has said he doesn't understand the popularity of the character

The same happened with robocop! The Padilha remake brings the opposite message from the original! It's made to fit the narrative of "good" military absolutism of USA. The might is right ideology.

How does this video only at 103k after 9 years? The analysis is so on point that I remember coming across it some years ago while I was either working or drifting off to sleep (video essays are great white noise generators) and sat through at least four or five other videos to find it after rewatching Watchmen - because the rewatch left me uneasy that I loved the movie when I was younger.

I hope your channel blows up. Or at least this video does.

The thing about Zombies is that they generally represent the fears of the general public at that moment in time. For example, while I did not see the original Dawn of the Dead, it took place in the late 70's.

Woodstock had taken place 9 years ago in 1969. The traditional values that had held up American culture were being heavily challenged and rejected. Hard work and quality tools and materials were being replaced with convenience and the "Mall Culture" of the 80's and 90's. So of course, the zombies attack in the malls, stripping you of your humanity until there's nothing left but a shambling, mindless mass of moaning meat staggering from store to store, looking for something (or someone) to "consume".

Shaun of the Dead. 2004. The fear is that of complacency, and the consequences that result from said complacency. Shaun's girlfriend is leaving him because he's TOO content with his life and has no ambitions. His best friend is a lazy bastard who lives on his couch, and his roommate despises them both, though he himself is trapped in his own level of complacency, which ultimately leads to him becoming a zombie.

Every zombie throughout the film is another person who lived a complacent life; the store clerk, Mary (the zombie), Shaun's own mother, the neighbors, and finally Ed (Shaun's friend). And even after the smoke has cleared, people use the zombies for the same menial tasks that they would have done when they were alive. Shaun and his girlfriend accept a life of mediocrity, and the whole message is that we're ALL zombies, it's just that some of us aren't dead yet.

It’s crazy how one man could destroy the prospects for an entire cinematic universe through one movie

Lovely use of Outkast by the way. It made me chuckle.
