Have you ever heard one go BOOM near your house? How long were your lights out? ๐
I'm an electrical engineer and I read every comment. If you spot something I got wrong, tell me and I'll pin the correction.

I've had this happen twice outside my house. Both times I found the fuse holder hanging open, and a dead squirrel on the ground.
I call it in, and they come out and replace it.

Watching this video as high voltage grid specialist made me smile.
Just one thing - it's oversimplified. Amount of systems and people working 24/7 is incredible.

It's a good thing that the transformers themselves rarely blow, because there are spectacular consequences when they do, they can actually set fire to nearby residential breaker boxes.

That's very interesting and I never knew about it.

Yep. And those fuses are not supposed to be quiet. They are called Expulsion Fuses. Theres a chemical lining in the fuse barrel which the arc generated by the high voltage reacts with, causing a literal gas blast inside the tube, expelling the fuse link and the arc out of the barrel. Hence "expulsion fuses". If you tried to use a standard fuse at distribution level voltages (commonly 7,200 volts in the US) it would literally explode. High voltage will just arc across the gap. Very violently.

Almost 9 minutes most of it not focusing on the real cause of the bang, something that could have been explained in a few sentences. Even that was skimmed over.

Most of the time its the cut out or less technical term it the fuse

no, the socket voltage varies depending by the location
