I actually understand the 'hands stopped listening' bit; it’s the sort of mashed-up metaphor I'd happily use in day-to-day speech because whoever is with my can likely infer from context that my hands are no longer responding to my conscious commands. I would never write it, though, at least, not without my narrator immediately trying to clarify what he means for fear of looking like an idiot...

I do think Jimmy wrote some of it. He’s constantly telling the audience what happens just before it happens. He does it in all his videos it drives me bonkers. He does the same in this book.

Ive said and heard "beat" used to mean "moment". Like "take a beat". But i dont think seen it used quite like it's used in this book
