I've been to the museum and ground zero of detonation. It's a very erie feeling. The museum had artifacts (debris, clothing, etc.) and even had a section of a building that had the shadow of a man standing next to a ladder IMPRINTED onto the siding... That's how insanely bright the blast was

Very scary to think that this was really 80 years ago.... technology has gotten far more scary now...

A step was left out. The radio spectrum within the band used by the radio-altimeter had to be scanned for active sources, and the three radio-altimeter channels had to be tuned to unused frequencies, while the aircraft was over the target area, and before the bomb could be armed. Only one man in the Army, Jacob Beser, knew how to do this delicate step, which is why Jake was on both the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bomb runs. (One other person may have known how to do this, an engineering student technician who had been involved in the development of that special radio-altimeter, at what would later become Johns Hopkins Applied Physic Laboratory, and who had been Jake's close friend before the war in both a ham radio club and a college fraternity. This could explain why that technician, even though "4F", was drafted in early 1945, only to fail his physical a second time.)

The last sound effects make it sound like the last thing damaged by the blast was a beer bottle.

What a lot of people dont understand is that Little Boy and Fat Man were not made for long term nuclear fallout. They were made for maximumly capable destruction.

One interesting bit of trivia about Fat Man — it used a different type of detonator (a spherical array) that needed to be INCREDIBLY precise on timing. They had actually never tested this as a whole system before the bomb was dropped on Nagasaki. The bombing itself was the test.

Interesting note. The B-29 crews were strictly instructed not to drop until visual confirmation, the Nagasaki bomb happened to miss by the standard radar drop error range.

About 20 years ago I got to sit in the B-29 Bomber Bocks Car at the US Air Force Museum. There were 2 guys sitting in the pilot & copilot seats so I sat in the flight engineers seat. It was weird being inside of a plane that dropped an atomic bomb on Japan. My Dad worked at the museum & once a year they had a employees appreciation dinner & opened a few planes that you could climb up into. They don't do that anymore.
