1:18:00 I’ve been with someone who laughed when I suggested we might ever break up, he said, “you think I’ll ever let you leave me?!” He laughed again. By the time I got the courage to leave, I left with the help of the police, a protective order, and a local domestic violence shelter who kept me safe during this process. In the risk assessment I was given to determine if I was eligible for the shelter’s services, I scored one of the highest possible scores… meaning my odds of dying if they didn’t help me was too substantial to turn me away.

My husband always told me that if I cheated he would kill me. I was 21 when I met him, had self-loathing and severe depression because of a traumatic childhood filled with molestation from my stepdad for 10 years. I thought, "Oh, my God, he loves me so much that he couldn't live without me." But, as time went on, I found out he was controlling as hell and tried to isolate me from family and friends. I stayed with him for 25 years until I got up the nerve to move out while he was at work. I have never looked back and am so glad I got out before I was too old to do anything.

I like how Steph said, "you think an affair is bad, he didn't let her say goodbye to her dying mother." Well said.

I agree with stephanie. These types of personalities dont do anything on accident. Everything has a secret double meaning

These stories…all of these countless stories…leave me feeling so incredibally thankful, appreciative, and in love with my husband of 6 years. As a teenager I married a man 11 years older than me. I’ve experienced the reality of being trapped emotionally and financially in an abusive marriage.
Y’all, never take your partner for granted if he’s good to you, and healthy for you. He’s priceless, and sometimes it’s easy to get comfortable and forget the incredible value of a healthy relationship.

My sister was secretly filing for divorce and thought her husband might kill her.
She was right.
It took a full decade before he was convicted.

I talked to my pastor & told him that my husband was putting his hands on me. Initially my pastor had told me that if I felt like my life was in danger to call the cops. Now he decided to “talk with him”. He pulled me into the office with both of them, had me in the corner like a rat in a trap & yelled & hollered at my husband for 3 hours. I still had to go home with him. I felt like he put my life in danger. I eventually got out & my ex husband went to prison for felony stalking me after violating the protective order multiple times. I thought I could trust my pastor, I was wrong

Unfortunately in the comments quite a few of us have lived through this kind of abuse. Thankfully we did live through it.

Hearing what she said about Mark taking care of her when she sounded drunk (after mixing the medications) reminds me of my grandmother. She had a back surgery and her then husband was supposed to be taking care of her with her pain pills. He gave her the bottle (she didn’t even know what day it was) and she was ODing at the table and her husband REFUSED to call 911. Luckily my uncle called my mom and they got her to the hospital (they had to narcan her twice). But the ENTIRE TIME she was saying how good her husband was to her. She just didn’t know because she was so out of it.

My ex told me once where a good place to hide a body would be. Every time he got mad at me he’d ask me if I was ready to take a trip to that location. I married him at 19 and never knew what a normal relationship should be. I thought I was a terrible wife. This is the type of thing they should teach kids in school.

I was told that I'd never leave him because I couldn't make it on my own. I was told so many times how useless I was, how stupid I was, how I couldn't live without him, that nobody else would ever love me. It took me too many years but I finally got away from him and guess what...I made it. I raised my then 6 & 9 year old children on my own without child support until I could get the court to garnish his wages to pay me. I ended up meeting someone several years later...we've been together for 18 years, married for 12 and he loves me (and I love him). It's so hard to get away from gaslighters. Everything Stephanie said is 100% true. It's really hard for people who have never been through it understand how hard it is to live with it and get away from it. I hope that if anyone here is going through anything like this that they can escape and find out that they are able to make it on their own and thrive without the person who is making them feel like they can't.
