My dad was in the railroad business with the Union Pacific, and he told the story of once being on a locomotive crossing Wyoming in the sub-zero blizzard muck. They got a call on the radio that someone had spotted a stowaway riding in the indent of a hopper car's frame, and to stop the train for fear of the person freezing to death. So they did, and walked back to find the guy hunched up in the space against the aft side of the hopper.. whereas they told him he had to come and ride in the locomotive. But, amazingly, the guy refused. They told him they would not move the train otherwise.. so the guy went up front to the cab-- and never spoke a single word to them the whole rest of the ride. This was decades ago, but I will always remember that strange story.
