They're Not Buying Farmland To Farm It Anymore — And Your Power Bill Is Paying For It

Fifty feet. That's the distance between a working cattle ranch in this video and the data centre going up beside it. Not fifty acres. Fifty feet. I went through 5,587 TikTok videos from American farmers, ranchers and rural voters. My last four videos were all the same shape — somebody voted for something and then the bill arrived. This one is different, because this one has a buyer in it. A Kentucky family is offered twenty-six point four million dollars for land that has been theirs for two hundred years, and turns it down in six words. A man in Indiana says the government's offer to farmers works out to thirty-six dollars an acre. Those two numbers are about the same dirt. And then there is the part that reaches people who have never set foot on a farm. A woman in New Jersey used less electricity last summer and paid more for it. In the regional market that sets her price, capacity costs rose 800% in one auction — and according to that market's own independent monitor, data centres accounted for 63% of the increase. But the thing I did not expect is why the land is for sale in the first place. It is not tech. It is arithmetic. A farm worth three million dollars, three children, one of whom farms — and the fair thing to do, the decent keep-the-peace thing, is what starts a farm being sold by the acre. An estate attorney in this video explains it better than anyone I found. Three things I want to be straight about, because they decide whether this is worth half an hour: There is a man in here who thinks all of this is fine, and he makes the best case for it I found in five and a half thousand videos — a million acres against eight hundred and seventy-five million, golf courses using thirty times the water, and a comparison to the fracking panic. He is in the video uncut. There is a clip with the most frightening claims in the whole pool — stillborn calves, vanished bees — where the man making them stops halfway through and says the science is not confirmed. I left that sentence in. It makes the clip hit softer and the video worth more. And one clip in here is a comedy sketch. It is labelled as one on screen from the first frame. Nobody in this video is breaking the law. That is not a comfort. It is the problem.
