I am 30 and work in IT. My life is surrounded by modern technology at all times. However, when I was a teenager, my grandmother's house flooded and I spend the entire afternoon with some other family members throwing out hundreds of pounds of destroyed items (honestly, most of it should have been thrown out before the flooding, but the damaged goods from the flood was excuse enough to do the cleaning). By the time dinner was ready that evening, I was covered in dirt, sweaty, and my arms were getting sore from hauling the trash up a flight of stairs over and over again. It was then that I happily declared out loud that "I believe I earned my dinner tonight." That was the first time I can really remember the joy of hard labor. It doesn't matter that it was dirty, painful, and all around unpleasant. I worked hard and had not only accomplished something, but help out my family in the process.

The art of living. That's what I love to do. Slow down, appreciate the small simple things. My friends think its boring but i sew, bake, cook from scratch, grind wheat, can foods, harvest wild berries, forage. I thank God I can live a simple life.

I grew up on a farm in Virginia and we worked our tails off. I hated it. But after leaving and getting out on my own, I realized I had developed over those years a work ethic that wouldn't stop. I built my own home, started three retail stores, and finally retired at fifty nine. Still garden and can and do building related things. What I hated as a youth, I now look back and realize that hard work made me the man I am today!
