It's a pity that the WonderSwan never made it out of Japan, it could have been a great contender

I recognized Bobby is going home instantly as I have at least 1 English version, and at least 2 German versions of this cartridge.
Games and hardware made by "other" companies have always fascinated me.

Calling your bootleg game console the Pirate takes some serious balls.

My dad was in the US Navy from 1983 to 2003. One of the ships he served on in the early 90’s stopped at a port in Thailand and he was able to go ashore and one of the shops he went into had a stack of bootleg GameBoy games. He got a 64 in 1 cart that I still have to this day. It worked on me and my brother’s GameBoy’s with no problems. Still works to this day.

the game boy was simply unbeatable; no matter what competitor came it was always gonna be behind, but at least their own libraries were always interesting to look at

I have a broken Gamate on my shelf. I traded some games for it in the hopes it would work somehow. It didn’t. Incidently my favourite video on the Gamate is by Ashens. "Homosexual friend is not really the most marvellous name" is stuck in my head to this day.

BIT Corp also made the BIT60 which was a computer version of the Atari 2600 using the chips of the 2600. It even sported a version of BASIC. I reviewed a unit for the 2600 Connection newsletter. Also the BIT60 also had a cartridge slot for Atari 2600 games & would run them instead of booting up as a computer. I wish I could get one but at least I know it exists.

I wanted nothing more than a Game Boy. However, my parents didn't have the money, so I was practically forced to buy an alternative. My first cartridge-based handheld was the Mega Duck. That device cost 75 guilders (Dutch currency), whereas the Game Boy cost 199 guilders. Later, I bought a Super Vision for 50 guilders, while the Game Boy still cost 199. Quite a while after that, I bought an Atari Lynx II. Atari was winding down operations in Europe, so these units were being sold at bargain-basement prices—50 guilders, which included Batman Returns and a carrying case. The games cost 10 guilders each. The Game Boy was still popular and cost 199 guilders, and its games didn't sell for less than 50 guilders either. Looking back, you could say that if I wanted a Game Boy so badly, I should have been patient instead of buying three new handhelds. But I was 11 when I bought the Mega Duck and 15 when I bought the Lynx. Just try finding someone that age who can hold onto their money for more than two years and happily keep playing with their old toys. I’m glad that alternatives to Nintendo existed, at least.
