  Hey, got some additional info for you based on the comments. <br><br>Total cost of my NAS is 1475 Euro | 475 Euro NAS + &nbsp;850 Euro HDDs + $180 (theoretically) &nbsp;SSDs from ORICO<br><br>Part 2 is live - <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PkRP59EW8io">https://youtu.be/PkRP59EW8io</a><br><br>Several people noted that using standby mode can negatively affect the lifespan of hard drives. And that&apos;s true. In my case, the drives woke up 2-3 times a day, but I decided to increase the standby delay time from 30 minutes to 180.<br><br>Forgot to mention! I did configure the BIOS, to make CPU fan silent. <br>Even though the fan is 3-pin, its speed can still be adjusted by voltage. <br>This setting is located in Bios -&gt; Advanced -&gt; Hardware Monitor -&gt; <br>Fan Mode [PWM Mode] <br> &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Fan off temp limit: 20 <br> &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Fan start temp limit: 30 <br> &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Fan full speed temp limit: 65 <br> &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Fan start PWM: 40<br>With this settings CPU can be hot during full load, but maximum I had is 50% CPU load, so you can adjust it as you want.<br>The fan at the front of the case is also connected to the CPU socket via a splitter on the motherboard (because only this can be configured in the BIOS).<br><br>Thanks everyone for the tips, you guys are awesome!

  If you decide to build your own NUC, avoid the SilverStone SST-DS380 case. It seems attractive both in price and features, but in practice, it turned out to have a terrible drive basket cooling system. Temperatures rarely dropped below 50°C (122°F). I ended up using a grinder and completely redesigning the drive basket, rerouting the airflow, and replacing the fans. But even after that, the temperature remained around 40°C (104°F). Finally, I decided to take an 8-bay case from my old Synology, gutted it, redesigned the SATA connector assembly, and connected everything to the NUC motherboard via an M.2-to-SATA adapter. Now everything is fine, the drive temperature is 30°C-32°C, and the whole system is much quieter. The SilverStone case is in the trash. I watched the video with great interest and am thinking of switching to TrueNAS. Now everything runs on Synology DSM via ARCLoader.

  <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0T66mDNjsY&amp;t=835">13:55</a> an even easier way is to simply replace the drive in truenas, by going to system-&gt;boot-&gt;boot pool status-&gt;click on the hamburger menu on your boot pool and click replace, that way you&apos;re up and running even faster with a new boot device.

  I built my DIY NAS in 2014 with an ASRock Q1900DC-ITX, 8 gb, 2x2 tb Seagate NAS drives, running FreeNAS 9.2. &nbsp;It&apos;s still running flawlessly 11 years later, having transitioned through TrueNAS Core, and now to TrueNAS Scale. &nbsp;It&apos;s in a ThermalTake Core V1 case, and powered by a 90w laptop brick. &nbsp;I added 2x4tb WD Red Plus hdd&apos;s. &nbsp;When I did the TrueNAS scale upgrade, I modded the UEFI bios to insert support for NVMe ssd&apos;s as a boot drive, and added a 128 gb nvme ssd on a pcie 1x adapter card. &nbsp;It has never crashed, BSOD&apos;d or lost any data. &nbsp;I keep things simple, and don&apos;t run any other services on it. &nbsp;I love the 10w passively cooled cpu and laptop brick psu.

  You always seem to cover a topic that&apos;s recently of interest to me! Have been thinking about setting up my own NAS for a while, so it&apos;s really handy to have a guide to a modern (cost effective, and free-to-run) setup, thanks.<br><br>It&apos;s also nice to see TailScale get a shout-out! Just discovered it myself and it&apos;s far superior to my previous port-forwarding solutions. I hope it stays free forever.
