7-2 was such a fun level to end the game on IMO; it felt so different to a lot of the other last levels in Mario games with the multiple paths to choose etc - felt a bit of an adventure...

Beating Wart in grade school was hard but it was eclipsed two years later when I mastered Battletoads 💪

If you play as peach, you can easily soar right behind him and throw the vegetables into his back and you don’t have to worry about the bubbles at all

There's a trick fighting Wart that I learned by accident playing this as a kid, and will work for you in future plays since you favor Luigi or Peach for this level.

Using their special jumping abilities, when you get a vegetable, jump over and behind Wart. His bubbles don't go backwards, and when the mouth is open you can just chuck it in from behind and it still counts.

I usually take Path A, then upon completing it, I backtrack Path B down to where the mushroom is, so I can have four hits in the Wart battle.
(Maybe it was the other way around…been a while since I’ve played this).

How did people play this game back then? You ask, because you could die on 7-2 and game over back to the beginning of the game?

Simple, the game didn't take long to complete beginning to end. You might have been playing the game for 30-45 minutes and if Wart ended your game, yes, it was aggravating, yes you stewed in the loss, but you really only lost 30-45 minutes of your life and you knew next time your muscle memory would be a little better and you had a slightly better chance of finally BEATING THE GAME!

There was a magic about beating a game back when game over back to the beginning was a common thing. You didn't expect to beat games, you hoped and aspired to someday maybe beat the game you were playing. Games weren't designed to be beat unless you were really good and persistent. The eventual game over screen back to the title screen was the expected outcome. The idea that you could actually maybe beat it on this playthrough made you giddy. Then once you did beat it, you wanted to play it again, and you realized you could now beat this game from beginning to end whenever you wanted. You could literally sit your friends or your parents down and show them the whole game from beginning to end (if they were so patient) as well as your mastery of it.

When I was 7, Mario 2 became the first video game that I really became addicted to. I loved it but it also enraged me many times (which of course would have my parents giving me crap about yelling at the tv, putting me in an even more angsty place). Including this level. But the game was too much fun for me to stop playing it just because of some frustration and disappointment. You knew finally beating it would make all that angst worth it. And when I did beat it, it sure was worth it. One of the classic endings of the NES library, even if it was kind of a bummer the whole thing was just a dream. It's still such an iconic end screen and musical track.

Nice breakdown! It’s worth mentioning that if you start by taking path B, you could get the mushroom, then backtrack to the fork in the road, go down path A, and get the other mushroom. Obviously it takes longer, but having that extra HP for that vertical chain/spark shaft and the boss gauntlet that follows could really help.

Crazy how we’re still talking about a game that is as far away from us in time as 1950 was when it was originally released in 1988. That jank be crazy than sheeeeeeit. And in another 5 years, SMB 2 will be the halfway point between the end of WWII and 2031.

The thing about NES games is that they have a rhythm to the gameplay. Once you learn the rhythm, it’s easy. I’ve never taken route A before, and was thrown off by how challenging B seemed in this footage.

You're actually beating Wart correctly. The easiest way is to stand at the pillar near his platform, dodging bubbles as necessary, and just lob veggies at his belly. All of Wart is vulnerable while his mouth is open.
