We had school dinners cooked by cooks who worked at the school.

Bedtime wasn't rigidly at 7pm. It gradually gets older as kids grow older. That's what happened when I was I was a child and it's how we raised our daughters.

Uniforms are also (as well as preventing catwalk culture in schools), useful for identifying which school a child attends. So if there are hundreds of kids running round together, on school trips, for example, they can all be identified. at a glance and counted by the teachers.

It does NOT "rain all the time" in Britain. It rains FREQUENTLY - but that is fundamentally different.

An aside re. the use of language in front of the kids. My ex-wife was driving my then four year old step daughter sitting sweetly in her seat watching the world go by, when some fool pulled out in front of her car causing her to brake suddenly. A little voice from the back of the car chimed in "Dipstick!". The kids not only pick up the words but the right context in which to use them - often to hilarious effect, when least expected.

I was travelling to school by public transport (steam-hauled train after a 3/4 mile walk to the station) from the age of 11 back in 1951. I'd been travelling on public transport adult-free for some years already. It wasn't unusual.
