At 70, almost broke because for years trying to survive in the US with way overpriced everything , took off for Siem Reap, Cambodia on my social security income in January. I'm using it as a base. Easy 1 year, multi-entry visa and chill, inexpensive living. I love it here. I know all about the Cambodia haters but you do you. I love all the S.E. Asia countries to stay short term but only 1 allows me the ease, affordability and lack of bureaucracy to live in long term.

I absolutely love how this dude just low key roasts people in this video. In a world full of so much sensitivity and intolerance of being offended I love to see a little roasting from time to time.

This is also excellent information. Invaluable. I have been so over the US for so long now and have dreamed of going to Vietnam and you're mentioning things here that I would have never thought of. This video is getting a save and will be the seed for everything I do and look for.

I’m going to tell you guys a story.

I was working 60 hours a week in the USA I invested and saved pretty much my whole life. At 44 I realized I had $3500 a month in dividends but that wasn’t enough to retire. I was tired overweight had chest pains and everything.

When I got to NHA Trang I stayed at a hotel near the beach for my first month. I got up ran on the beach worked out then went home. I ordered all my food and watched movie and slept.

It took me that whole month just to recover from the pains from working myself to death.

What’s good about Vietnam is if you don’t want to be bothered no one will bother you. But if you want to be part of the community like I am now then your neighbors will invite you over and they will also come over for a chat all the time even without an invite.

But you know what? I’m healed so it isn’t an inconvenience. I for the first time in my life look forward to seeing my neighbors. They don’t ask for food or anything. They just come to talk. But I make sure to have a beer and some food handy.

I did it in 2019 - $15 / month rent provincial town many local Vietnamese had never heard of. I bought produce and shrimp from the local wet market and stayed out of the bars. I smoked the local grass and vegged out in my room, bought a bicycle and rode around for exercise. I could have made 10K last two years Easily but alas, the language barrier and basic sustenance level of living got to me, 10K USD affords luxury living in the sticks. Before that I spent 12 years in China and Thailand and was already very adept at living in Asia on a shoestring. The people there were incredible and it was an experience.

"I don't have hands" I mean, that's a pretty valid reason for not getting a bike, man.

this is the first of this whole "expat in vietnam" videos the algorithm is serving me, but as a suburban dad in chicago I'm already enjoying this guy's ranting about how exhausting US expats can be. makes total sense.

Great video! I’ve been in Da Nang for five months now, but now heading to Bali for a bit.
I’ve been doing a pretty good job on the budget to feel a place out and integrate. I’m not a barfly, but I’ve joined several social meet up groups, Pickleball, badminton, surfing and motorbiking all over the place! It’s been a great experience and look forward to coming back at some point. Keep up the good work Evan 💪

I've been really contemplating doing something like this but I was very scared bc knowing nothing and moving across the globe is terrifying. But watching this video, I kept thinking to myself "I could do that". Really helped with confidence
