There are many cases where elderly people are put into residential care against their will because their homes are so cluttered that the mess is deemed to be a safety hazard to them. Keeping on top of clutter in your later years could be key in being able to preserve your independence and autonomy.

I asked a firefighter what was the top issue is; without hesitation, they said CLUTTER.

I decluttered the mail pile on the kitchen counter this weekend and found 2 checks that thankfully weren't past being able to cash, but close. Took them to the bank this morning. So glad I decided to clean up that pile!

It’s important to declutter earlier in your life. Don’t leave a burden for your family when you pass. Also it’s safer to have less stuff.

I just realized that having a pedestal sink is not that bad after all.

Hoarding usually comes from some kind of need to emotionally cocoon yourself. To protect or to comfort after loss. However, my deceased family were what I’d call clean hoarders - they were from the “make do and mend” era - they just had so many blankets, towels, storage boxes, just-in-case items. I dealt with my grief by throwing myself into declutterring the house thoroughly. It was a great distraction from the grief. I found a photograph of my Grannie that she used to talk about. It was a black and white photo of herself as a toddler, taken in the early 1900s. She was stood still and looking serious, because you had to hold the pose for a long time for old cameras, and the pictures were always a little faded in places so the photographer had touched up parts with pencil and charcoal to add more definition. It always sounded charming. She was sad it must have been accidentally thrown out long ago….but of course it was just hiding in the hoard….it had remained cocooned, all rolled up in a tube, for about 70years behind a mountain of blankets in a high up cupboard!!

It’s now framed and has pride of place in my home. I’m sad she never got to see it again but she’d be so happy to know it wasn’t lost forever.

When i graduated high school, I went straight into the Marine Corps. My bedroom stayed cluttered my entire childhood! My mom cleaned out my room about a year into my enlistment... including my porcelain doll collection. They went lovingly into a tote box and stored in the shed. Fast forward about 5 years. I was home from the military but I had not gone through all the things my mom had stored away for me when there was a wildfire that tore through the area. Sadly, it got my parents house, but thankfully they had time to evacuate and get most of their keepsakes. Just not my porcelain dolls. When we went back to look through the rubble, my husband lifted a sheet of metal left from the shed and found about 50 eye-less dolls faces staring back at him!!! The dolls all had porcelain heads, but all the rest were plastic and fabrics, so during the fire everything but the heads burned away, leaving the soulless heads behind.... to this day he gets a chill down his back every time he sees a porcelain doll. Tha k God we had all boys!

really needed this today....now I'm going up to my sewing room and toss all that scrap fabric I will never use and make enough room to set up the quilting frame I bought 6 months ago!

I think I shared this on here before
but it bears repeating. Our garage was cluttered - not badly, but we had too much stuff. Our patio was cluttered too. My husband rented a yard box recently. He took a week off at work and focused on decluttering! It was awesome! He completely gutted the garage except for the built-ins. He also decluttered the patio. My hero! We hired a tree service to remove huge shrubs. I cannot tell you how much lighter we feel! Also, I stayed out of my husband's way. I gave him permission to pitch my stuff too. It was only taking up space and I was excitex to see it GO!!!!

The cash thing is actually not as rare as you would think. My friend decluttered a parent's house after that parent moved into another residence and found THOUSANDS of dollars worth of cash in bank envelopes just buried in the other paper piles that had built up around the house. Command centers for the win!
