Darren Zhou, a 25-year-old former Goldman Sachs financial analyst (rather than an engineer) based in West Palm Beach, Florida, was arrested after OpenAI flagged his ChatGPT conversations and alerted the FBI. Zhou had used the AI chatbot over several months to detail explicit plans to kidnap, rape, and murder his 21-year-old ex-girlfriend and her family following a breakup.<br>Goldman sachs terminated his employment. <br><br>With the explicit approval of the victim, Zhou entered a plea deal that allowed him to avoid prison time. He was sentenced to eight years of probation with withheld adjudication, under strict conditions that include two years of electronic ankle monitoring, a total ban on contacting the victim or her family, and a prohibition on possessing firearms.<br><br>Glad FBI caught this in time, so a brutal murder is prevented.
