Great channel. It would be awesome if you could, someday, do a rundown of the 1998 Merlin series with Sam Neill (RIP). I always learn a lot listening to your videos.

Fun fact. I sort of know the script advisors and the Ice Lake scene was originally intended to be in Gladiator. They decided not to use it and simply transferred the whole scene over to this ovie.

Neither history nor myth. I’ve written 2 novels on the fifth century and read “all the books” and thought this movie was way disappointing. Shame, too, because the fifth and sixth centuries are crazy interesting and would give any fantasy world a run for their money. Good video and strong research shown on what things you did find. A few things the movie did okay was: the Saxon invasion with Hengest, etc was somewhat in line with The Venerable Bede and 2) the Sarmatians were still somewhat of a thing in early fifth century Britain as evidenced by Constantine III’s right hand man Gerontius (both circa 406-413) being specifically mentioned as “half-Sarmatian”. 3) The Pelagius thing was interesting, as …. despite Pelagius being presumed dead after his “heresy” failed in the continent, his actual death was unknown and some speculate he just went back home. Thanks again!

It's been years since I've seen this movie. I thought these men were the descendants of the Sarmatians who were captured in battle. Several generations were born in Britain and these who were the last men to be bound to fulfil their service. Their sons would be the first generation to be born free.
