Great atmosphere - sounds of the sea, sand, shingle,  engines, lapping waters and howling winds. Cosy (not to mention the intriguing Cold War plot)

I listened to this with my mum when it was first on the radio. I remember it been very exciting as a boy, and the pleasure of listening with my mum.

Not only did I enjoy listening to this good Radio Drama, I enjoyed reading the comments. So I thought I would add this little comment, a very true story that some of you might find interesting. I’ve just turned 77 so there’s not many of this line left. How wonderful it would be if there was another person, like me , listening to The Dark Island. ……. I know that my father would have loved this story, he was an avid reader , especially stories of the sea……Hammond Innes was one of his favourites.  At the beginning of WW2 dad was a sailor on board the ROYAL OAK, anchored up in Scapa Flow. This ship was torpedoed and sunk in these dark waters of Orkney. My father swam for his life and reached the rocky shore to met and helped by the lovely people of Orkney.  So, stories like this, set in islands of Orkney with drama and intrigue are right ‘up my line’.     “Any more children of ROYAL OAK survivors out there??? Listening to and enjoying stories like this?

My father was a warrant officer managing a communications centre at R.A.F. Skeabrae in the Orkneys in 1945. I am almost 74 but still hope to visit the Orkneys someday.

I have been listening to AUDIO BOOKS for years and had TOTALLY forgotten how much more entertaining it is to listen to DRAMATIZATIONS!  Thank you!

Amazing how they can bring about the chemistry between the characters even without any visuals. Love the pace and details. Truly classic!

What’s so great is that you can immerse yourself so much that you feel part of the story and you can use your imagination - what a contrast from using your eyes to just your ears
