Love your channel and glad I found it. You have great taste and interesting insights. I'm a big mystery fan and especially a fan of Agatha Christie and John Dickson Carr.
Looking forward to hearing more of your thoughts on JDC books 😊

    I'm so glad P.D. James was a hit! 🙂

The Franchise Affair was so good! And based on a true story so that’s kinda cool.

Hey Nicole! Happy to see that you enjoyed all your reads this past week. P.D. James' Dalgliesh novels continue to get better and better as your read through the series. You're right, they are very deliberately-paced and complex, and spend a lot of time digging into the psychology of the characters; almost more like straight novels with mystery in them. You might also try her two Cordelia Gray mysteries, about a female private eye: An Unsuitable Job for a Woman and The Skull Beneath the Skin. Oh, and Death Comes to Pemberly is good, but like you, I'm not overly keen on what, even in James' highly-capable hands, comes off a bit like elevated fan fiction.

So glad you got to Jospehine Tey, too. I really like the Inspector Grant novels, but her two standalone mystery/thrillers (Brat Farrar and Miss Pym Disposes) are also really good. I especially recommend you check out Miss Pym Disposes, which is a very enjoyable murder mystery set at a girls' school.

My favourite P. D. James novel so far is A Taste for Death. I have also read An Unsuitable Job for a Woman, The Black Tower, and The Murder Room, all of which I enjoyed - but not as much as A Taste for Death. I guess The Murder Room would be my second favourite.

All your enthusiasm for John Dickson Carr is getting me back in the mood for him too...even though I did a bit of a JDC marathon last summer. By chance, I put The Magic-Lantern Murders on order just this morning. And yes, I already have The Unicorn Murders. I've also dug out one I read years ago - know I enjoyed it, but have forgotten it - The Curse of the Bronze Lamp. Your reviews of his books mean I'll get to all of them soon.

The first two Josephine Tey books I read were The Franchise Affair, and The Daughter of Time. I liked both; I prefer The Franchise Affair, even though it's not really a whodunit. Both were recommended to me by one reading guide, and for a long time, I never went back to Josephine Tey. However, other guides got me to read what have become my two favourites - Miss Pym Disposes, and Brat Farrar. So Franchise Affair dropped to third place, but I still think it's a great book. Oh, A Shilling for Candles was terrific too. I seem to have given all the Josephine Tey books I've read 4 out of 5 stars.

I love how enthusiastic you get about your reads! From your selection, I've read "Sparkling Cyanide" (long time ago, don't remember the story), and "Cover her Face". I love P D James and intend to read more by her. Haven't read "Death comes to Pemberley", which I think is the book you're referring to. I haven't been reading this week - too busy with other stuff :) but plan to get back into it.
