It's sad that we will never know what Wittgenstein was trying to say...

Reading Wittgenstein and Nietzsche was one of the main things that motivated me to get fluent in German. Dazzling writers each in their own way. Some of Wittgenstein's passages are uniquely haunting and enigmatic. Strange, intense, and amazing man.

More on wittgenstein. You are truly articulating his philosophy outside the sphere and aura of other people who are too scientific and mathematical when dealing with him

Something that strikes me watching this is how close Wittgenstein comes to Korzybski’s “the map is not the territory," but then goes somewhere more radical. Korzybski’s remedy was better maps, more precise language, cleaner correspondence between symbol and referent. Wittgenstein seems to be saying the whole cartographic impulse is where the bewitchment begins. The beetle in the box isn’t just a bad map of inner experience; it’s the illusion that there was ever a territory there waiting to be mapped. Philosophy’s job isn’t better mapmaking. It’s noticing you were never lost in the first place.

i've often thought about this dilemma when trying to convey the sense of a psychedelic trip to someone who has never experienced it. There is NO POSSIBLE WAY to translate it using our systems of language, and remotely approach the experience. You can be great with analogies and even creative ways to mind another's mind in the direction of what it felt like, but when you reflect upon that communication, you are left with the cold realization that if anything-you did more damage in that attempted communication than good.<br>thanks man, always love your fabulous insight and interpretations of these fascinating thinkers of our world.

I love Wittgenstein–I was taught him by Avner Baz a few years ago. Avner has done a lot of excellent contemporary work on ordinary language philosophy, and if you haven't read him before I think you would love his work on aspect perception and his cavellian/wittgensteinian criticisms of contemporary analytic philosophy. i'm not sure if you're in that world but i think it's interesting to see a salient criticism of what philosophy in american universities has become from the perspective of an existentialist/phenomenological/ordinary language philosopher. Also I'm so happy you're getting to wittgenstein–as a philosophy student its insane to me how horribly mistreated his ideas have been in the anglosphere and seeing videos like these remind me that the ideas, although complicated, aren't as incomprehensible as some in the analytic tradition would want you to believe.
