  Japan has a high trust society, like we used to have. During Fukishima, the had zero looting. Compare that to natural disasters in the U.S.

  I love the Japanese ideas but I'm 67 retired and i have severe lower back arthritis so low furniture is out of the question. But I do love the minimalism of it's home ideas.

  For curtains and blinds geography matters. In hot countries, where temperature is usually high, people need curtain and blinds because they need air from open windows but no sunlight. Curtain/blinds help pass the air but block sunlight.

  I see lots of folks commenting about low furniture being difficult or impossible for elderly. The Japanese have done this on a daily basis their entire lives, which is what we should do to remain flexible! And their diet doesnt create arthritis like ours. We Americans are so u healthy. I lived in Japan for over a year, BTW.

  Nordic homes are also minimal, although more colorful. They also do not have acquisition in the core of their culture.

  We buy room darkening curtains because we don’t want light coming in, not because we want privacy.

  Lots of good ideas. I’ll disagree about hallways. In the sleeping area, no one wants to walk through someone’s bedroom to get to their bedroom or their bathroom

  I’m 94, the occasional time I wear my outside shoes inside has not killed me.<br>My curtains keep the 40c summer temperature outside and the winter temperature in the same place.<br>My sofa lets me lie down and sleep, my armchair lets me recline and watch TV.<br>My hall stores my hat rack and my raincoat, walking stick and when required outside shoes. ALSO<br>a place to meet and stop unwanted visitors.<br>Kitchen bins emptied daily.<br>I have stayed in Tokyo twice. Tried sitting on the floor with my legs down in a hole “oriri”?<br>With a fire just to keep warm-uncomfortable to say the least .<br>Japanese houses have few rooms because many have very small land area.<br>I’ll keep my comfortable home with its many options thank you.

  I&apos;m a very neat maximalist. My life is full of cherished memories and treasured items. &nbsp;Everything has a place and everything in its place. &nbsp;I don&apos;t need to go window shopping in my old age because I can view my stuff in the glass cabinets, no dust. I have drawers of cute things and memorabilia which I &quot;visit&quot; oft and on . &nbsp;My kitchen has built in wall cabinets which store a lot of stuff including emergency food stocks . <br>My tools are also in drawers. <br>I have an assortment of banners/ valances for windows which reflect the seasons, the moods or various occasions. I&apos;m really really happy in my home.

  Yes, that&apos;s true. I do want light through my windows during the day. But I also want ZERO light at night. I want a pitch-black, no-light-creeping-in room at night. I want pitch Black to sleep in. In other words, managing light during the day and during the night are very different things.

  I got to live in Japan and loved it! The people are incredible and just my type.
