As an italian, I am very ashamed of the fact that we could not manage to send these people to jail. We surrendered and started considering them as something you need to coexist with. How sad

A rubber band around a wallet makes them more difficult to remove from a pocket.

Many pickpockets and thieves in Europe are Eastern European gangs who travel to tourist hot spots at popular times. Sad, but true. I have one credit card with a $500 limit that I use for daily purchases. I can top it up in the evening for the next day. When I was in Italy someone zoomed past on a moped and tried to grab a bag. It was a crossbody - everyone ended up on the road. The moped driver was grabbed by locals, furious at them stealing. It was amazing to watch.

Seconds matter too. If someone distracts, bumps or touches you for any reason, check your wallet or phone instantaneously. It happened to me at the Vatican and I was able to chase the POS down, curse her out and retrieve my wallet. Also check the contents of your wallet on the spot because she managed to take the cash out which I also retrieved.

Just for the record, most pickpockets are not italian nationals. Pay by credit card. The italian government wants merchants to use credit cards to better avoid fiscal evasion as they call it.

My girlfriend and I were standing inside a crowded metro in Rome. We both had our roller cases, which means that would have been very difficult to chase a pick pocket. Two young women got on, one was wearing a bright colorful sequined jacket and took out a mirror and started to apply lipstick. The other young woman changed her position to my be on wife’s side. The two women got off and my girlfriend realized the zipper on her sling bag was unzipped. Fortunately we were vigilant and she only had tissues in that pocket. The bright colorful sequined jacket was a clever distraction.

Just witnessed 2 pickpockets attempts. 1st was at Trevi Fountain at around 8:45pm. The perpetrator was a 7-8 year old middle eastern looking boy. 2nd was on metro around 9:20pm. The perpetrator was about 190cm 95kg 30ish year old black guy. Entered and exit different train compartments while having a black sweater covering his left forearm. Repeatedly obstructing female passengers from entering the train. After 2 station stops, I shouted "pickpocket", he then exited at the third station stop.
