This was really great, I've always been too scared to use the deck, but I love these tips 🥳

I have a campaign surrounding the Deck of Many Things. The deck has an owner. An owner that lets people draw from it, and when a town has enough chaos from it, he leaves. He might even have people play little pranks for him to draw from the deck. There's a prison the players can go to to save people, a way to find their souls, every card has adventures to go to connected to them. People that died to Skull came back to find and slay the owner and can be good or bad for the players. There's an angel that wants to stop the chaos, a mob boss that wants to force people to draw and steal the positive effects while dodging the bad. Then there's the owner who is his own blend of bad news at the end. Even ways to find a soul trapped by Void. And the players never touch the deck themselves.

There is a bit of Something Wicked this Way Comes, and Needful Things involved in the campaign.

I've used the Deck in three games as the DM (including Gardmore Abbey) and one as a player, and I really, genuinely do not understand why everyone is scared of it.

Every "bad" card except Skull is just a plot generator. If your game can withstand character death, it can survive those cards. The results of wishes and Fates are under the DM's control, so they're only a problem if the DM chooses for them to be.

There are, I think, only inherently disruptive cards: Jester and Sun. Rocketing one character into a whole other tier of play doesn't really have a natural remedy in 5e.

I love the version of the deck you have. Where did you get it? I'd like to own a copy of that set.

In that Penny Arcade strip, did you replace panel 1 with an extra look at panel 3?
