I am taking at least a year to incorporate these rules into my newly built, one bedroom apartment. Before I bring anything in it must earn its place. Almost all objects are from Japan including my Tatami mats, futon, 1920’s kimono dresser and two bonsai trees.
It is so easy to clean and greets me with joy when I come home.
Love Laura

New baby comes in, old child goes out, LOL. I like clear surfaces and especially window sills. Taking your shoes off and letting work stay outside so your home is peaceful is something we are striving for. We want our home to be a sanctuary from the outside world. When we shifted home over a year ago, we did some purging of items. We still have a way to go. I agree, with the messy house messy mind.

Dear Japanese and those who are fans of Japanese culture: Strategies such as minimalism, makes sense in an extremely densely populated country, where a whole family lives in an apartment, the size of a livingroom somewhere else. It should not be transferred unfiltered to all other countries, where it does not fit. Believe me, that people outside of Japan are completly able organize their daily life, even if they might not do it exactly the way Japanese people do. It's a misconception to think that people outside of Japan do have chaotic or dirty houses and might not be able to take care of themselves and it's also a bit offensive. Please do not think, you have to teach us, how to live, we found out already how to do that. Please do not consider Japanese culture to be superior to other cultures. I do understand, that you love your culture. But I also have a culture and do love it too. Thank you.
